The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has released an advisory cautioning against the unauthorized use of cellular signal jammers, GPS blockers, or other signal jamming devices by the general public, deeming it illegal unless specifically authorized by the government.
In the interest of the public, the DoT issued a memorandum on July 1, explicitly stating that the government-approved jammers can only be acquired and employed by states, union territories, defense forces, and central police organizations.
It was stated in the advisory that private sector organizations and private individuals are prohibited from procuring or using jammers in India.
With prior approval from the competent authority, examination conducting bodies under the union/state government or union territories can make use of jammers sourced from authorized vendors and approved models.
Moreover, the Department of Telecommunications has explicitly stated that the promotion, sale, distribution, importation, or any other form of marketing of jammers in India is strictly prohibited, unless in accordance with government guidelines.
Not only jammers, but the Department of Transportation (DoT) has also deemed the use of mobile signal repeaters and boosters by individuals as illegal. A memo from the DoT highlights that the unauthorized use of repeaters can have adverse effects on public telecommunication services, as it can interfere with and disrupt the quality and coverage of such services.
The DoT had issued a serious warning to e-commerce companies, including Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, Alibaba, Aliexpress, Ebay, and others, in January, regarding their involvement in the sale of wireless jammer.
